It is the year 1240. Sibilia has lived most of her life in the mountaintop fortress of Montségur in southern France, one of the last outposts of an enlightened and innovative religious community, the Goodmen - or Cathars, as the Church calls them. Yet the future of her people is in jeopardy the Goodmen have been condemned as heretics and now the combined might of King and Church threatens to crush them.
Aided by friends and mentors, amongst whom a troubadour poet, a fugitive from the Inquisition, an elderly Jew and a former Saracen slave, she collaborates in the Goodmen's resistance, witnessing murder, betrayal, siege and battle; great bravery and fatal misjudgement. Ultimately, Sibilia alone is taught a secret and chosen to safeguard her people's faith.
Based on an historical episode, The Dove of Montségur evokes life in a singular medieval community, the tragic price paid for challenging the established order, and the possibility of redemption thanks to one girl's courage.

This is a great story from medieval France concerning the Cathars, a pre-reformation Christian sect and their persecution by the Papacy. It's exciting and wonderfully visual, with all sorts of Game of Thrones-type images coming to mind and the central characters are beautifully created, particularly the young girl Sibilia - often these sorts of characters can be a bit too 'goody two shoes' but the author has made her much more real. The description of the castle where most of the action takes place is particularly vivid. You really feel like you're walking around in thirteenth century Europe! A really compelling read.Product details
