Frank Harris (February 14, 1856 – August 27, 1931) was a British-born, naturalized-American author, editor, journalist and publisher, who was friendly with many well-known figures of his day. Though he attracted much attention during his life for his irascible, aggressive personality, editorship of famous periodicals, and friendship with the talented and famous, he is remembered mainly for his multiple-volume memoir My Life and Loves, which was banned in countries around the world for its sexual explicitness.

My Life and Loves eBook Frank Harris

Any reader considering purchasing this book MUST procure all five volumes -- it really is imcomplete otherwise. This book is a true masterpiece of literature. It should be read and studied in schools across the country. One theme in particular controls the author's task -- his "loves." The author notes that our sexual life (and the time spent thinking about it) occupies such a dominant position in our lives that more attention should be given to it in the writing of an autobiography. I think he is absolutely right. This feature alone sets his "autobiography" apart from the thousands of others that are available. And make no mistake, the exposition of "his loves" in this book is very, very sexually explicit. But do not let this put you off. There is such a beautiful and sincere candor in the way he describes his past loves. For example, the sexually explicit details are often followed with profound truths about human nature, which is of course what makes this book such a fascinating read. The author additionally intends this book as a sort of instruction manual for his young readers. Here is Mr. Harris in the forward to the five-volume set: "I have missed indescribable pleasures because the power to enjoy and to give delight is keenest early in life, while the understanding of both how to give and how to receive pleasure comes much later, when the faculties are already on the decline." The book is also of interest for its account of certain literary figures of the age. Frank Harris was a man of letters, and moved in many literary circles. What makes this book fascinating is that the author is not afraid to describe certain personal character flaws of some of the big names of literature, such as Bernard Shaw, John Ruskin, Thomas Carlyle, and many others. Frank Harris lived a complete life in every sense of the word, and it would have been a real treat to have known him personally. (It was rumored that even Oscar Wilde was humbled by this man.) This is the greatest autobiography ever written. I read all 1,300 pages in about three days, and then spent the next seven going back and re-reading favorite passages of mine.

My Life and Loves eBook Frank Harris Reviews

Apparently this man is the exceptional success. Not all that erotic but it depicts the author as a man that can do anything at anytime. Yawn.
If you are looking for a 19th century book with beautiful detail of life and LOVE meaning sex then read life and loves
This is an interesting period piece from a lively mind, very good reading and offering insight into a few 19th century luminaries.
Frank Harris and his recollections of his many famous pals and sex partners. Interesting, semi erotic read.
This book needs to be re-issued!!!
Book is too heavy to read comfortably.
I'm about 2/3rds of my way through this book's 5 volumes and nearly a thousand pages and will come back and finish this review when I finally finish the book. But I want to share my view so far. I didn't know of Frank Harris until our play reading group of retired university people at KU had a retired drama professor (Paul Lim) join us. He'd written a play ("Flesh, Flash & Frank Harris") which had been briefly performed on Broadway or nearby. That introduced me to Harris and made me want to read this book. Those who live in Lawrence, KS, (home of KU) as I do will find his mention of the Eldridge Hotel, Free State theater, and other still existing Lawrence landmarks very interesting 150 years later. The book was banned in the USA and England but that has since been rescinded. The banning was because of Harris's so-called pornographic descriptions of his sexual conquests (seemingly especially among virgins) beginning when he was about 16 years old and continuing for many years. Harris goes into great detail about how and what he touched first, 2nd, etc., with girl after girl, lady after lady -- so much so that I often thought, "you've got to be kidding that you remember this detail about the exact order in which & how you touched this part and then that and then that, etc., over half a century later! I think it's in Wikipedia's article on Frank Harris that I found this 'Time Magazine reflected in its March 21, 1960 issue "Had he not been a thundering liar, Frank Harris would have been a great autobiographer....he had the crippling disqualification that he told the truth, as Max Beerbohm remarked, only 'when his invention flagged'." Harris presents himself as a remarkable intellect -- memorizing long Greek (or Latin or German, etc.) poems on just one reading; a reader of many languages and a speaker of many of them so well that natives thought he was a fellow countryman. There are far better current books on achieving worthwhile sexual satisfaction than Harris's recommendation. Yet the 5 volumes are worthwhile for a view of life and many notable characters of the 19th and early 20th century -- Oscar Wilde, Karl Marx, GB Shaw, to name just a few. I do NOT find it a rapid read but it is a worthwhile one.
